I've just placed an order for two lutes, this is the big boy. Though I play a 13 course Baroque lute (with rider) already, the swan neck and body cavity will provide more volume for larger halls.

Last night my teacher invited me, a lutenist he plays with in a local early music ensemble, and two friends visiting from out of town to an evening of lutes at his house. Imagine, five lutenists in one living room in Toledo, Ohio! Well, four and a half -- I'm still on training wheels. And here's proof. The photographer is the fifth lutenist. I was clearly in over my head, so I mostly kept quiet and applauded on cue, but it was fun and the music was wonderful. I hardly ever get to hear lute solos, duets, and quartets live and close up like that.

If you've ever wondered what the inside of a lute looks like, here's your chance. This is my lute number 2 when I was building it. The pegbox, which you can't see, has already been glued onto the neck, but the fingerboard won't be put on until the soundboard is in place. The soundboard is face down in front of the bowl. The pieces of wood glued to the underside of the soundboard are bracing strips, which are shaved down selectively to give the lute it's particular tone. The strips on the inside of the bowl are reinforcements. The traditional thing to use is linen or strips of watercolor paper, but I use carbon fiber. I cheat whenever I think it will make a better instrument.
